Me and Vanessa will be exhibiting at the Short Run Small Press Fest in Seattle, Washington this Saturday, November 12th. It is the first of what I hope will be a annual festival, and it was put together by some really cool people (HEY KELLY) and there's a whole lot of great artists exhibiting there. We'll be tabling next to Tugboat Press at table 24 (I'm kind of really excited by this, they make this sweetass anthology called Papercutter).

IN OTHER NEWS Vanessa Keck has put together a great zine called WUZ THE BUG DEAL? that will be premiering at Short Run. Vanessa, Jim Henning (Vanessa's dad), and myself are all contributors. Here's a page of gnats that I drew for it.

I also contributed a piece for the Short Run art show after party thing that will be taking place at the Fantagraphics Bookstore. Thanks to the Froh!

Dylan Williams, the publisher behind Sparkplug Comics, passed away on September 10th, 2011. I was lucky enough to get to know him a little bit, he co-taught a comic's class with Lisa Mangum that I was a part of at the Independent Publishing Resource Center out here in pretty Portland, Oregon. The basic premise of the class was we would focus on comics from different parts of the world each week, and work on and talk about our own personal projects as well. It was a really great experience, Dylan and Lisa would bring in stacks upon stacks of books every week that we would ogle at and be overwhelmed by. It was really an eye-opener for me. Both Dylan and Lisa were so encouraging, smart, and loving. I generally sat back and listened to what everyone had to say and just had a really good time.

There have been lots of loving tributes to the Dylan, most are collected at the Comics Reporter website. They also did a great retrospective of his work there as well.

Reporter was Dylan's most recent comics work, y'all should check it.

Please take a moment and consider buying some books from Sparkplug, they could definitely use the support right now.

This is probably the oldest drawing of mine that I still have, I'm guessing I was four or so.

Ben Powers drawing. He was part of Mrs. Morley's first grade class, which was probably my all time favorite school year. She had this art project where every student would get a sheet of paper with some sort of squiggly line printed on it and you were supposed to use that to create your own art. I still love this idea, good idea for an anthology.

Chester Brown is supposed to be in Seattle this Thursday, I think me and Nenn are gunna go. I just started to read Louis Riel this week, and I'm feelin' it. I guess I was put off by the fact that Mr. Brown talks about how he tried to make an emotionless book, and just present the information, which is a contrast to what initially attracted me to him. But I just finished part 1 today and I'm totally engaged and excited to read more. I'm blogging! This book is such old news, read the new one ya doofs!

( a note about the "Astro Boy hair." Apparently Chester redrew a bunch of pages when he collected the whole book after it had already been serialized. The design of Louis Riel's hair morphed throughout the story, and that was one of the things he went back and changed to have a consistent design of the character. Sammy Harkham refers to it in an interview, "he had to go back and put the Astro Boy hair in." I'm blogging way too much here. )

I am honored to say that myself and Thomas Stemrich have a story published in the latest issue of Robin Bougie's adults-only-comic-anthology, Sleazy Slice (the title being somewhat of a tribute to the old Greg Irons comic series, Deviant Slice. Own this book).

Our story is called After the Snow, here's Robin's description of it upon first seeing it:

"The comic is like a strange teen sex comedy from the 80s crossed with a 60s drive-in classic, with a little hardcore porn tossed in for spice."
